How area codes work
An area code (NPA) is the first 3 digits of a 10-digit North American phone number. The US, Canada, and much of the Caribbean share the +1 country code under the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). When a region runs out of numbers, the system adds a split (the area is divided) or an overlay (a second code covers the same area — why you dial all 10 digits), so one city can be served by several codes.
Why you get calls from your own area code
Scammers use "neighbor spoofing" to make caller ID show a local number you're more likely to answer. The displayed code proves nothing about where the caller really is — judge the call by what it asks for, and look up the exact number.
